Welcome to Sandcastles
There are around 2,000 children in Western Australia living with life-limiting conditions and for each of those children, there are numerous family members including parents, siblings and extended family who will be affected in their own lives.
For many families across WA, specialised respite, clinical and end-of-life care remains difficult to access. The pressure is constant — emotionally, financially and psychologically — often over many years. Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) Children’s Hospice will provide state-of-the-art clinical care in a home-like coastal environment, with family-centred support at its heart.
We’re inviting partners to help bring this to life.
This initiative is being delivered in partnership with the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) and organisations committed to changing the future of care for children and families in Western Australia.

How will funding for Sandcastles Children’s Hospice be used?
Funding will support establishing the hospice and the ongoing care provided within it. This includes construction, care and the services that support children and families throughout their time at Sandcastles.
Who is delivering the project?
Sandcastles is being delivered by Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation in partnership with the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS).
What are the key facility highlights of Sandcastles?
Sandcastles Children’s Hospice is a purpose-built, seven-bed facility in Swanbourne designed to deliver clinical care in a warm, home-like environment.
It will include family suites, shared living spaces, play areas and outdoor sanctuary alongside dedicated therapy and clinical spaces, including a hydrotherapy pool.
Designed to support both children and their families, Sandcastles will provide respite care, end-of-life care and ongoing support, including bereavement services across WA.
How many children and families can stay at Sandcastles?
Up to seven children can stay at Sandcastles Children’s Hospice at any one time, ensuring a personalised level of care. There are also three two-bedroom family suites, so up to three families can stay alongside their child during their visit.
How much does it cost to stay at Sandcastles?
Sandcastles will be part of Western Australia’s public health system, with clinical care funded by the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) and the ongoing non-clinical care support funded by Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation. All services are offered free-of-charge to families.
How can I make a referral?
To access Sandcastles, a child must be under 18 and have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.
All referrals will be actioned by Perth Children’s Hospital more details will be provided in the coming weeks.
